Running with Sticks: Encouraging Risk in Your Figure Art

October 27 - 29, 2017
9:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Hannon Barn, Arroyo Grande, CA
$450 (includes $100 non-refundable deposit)

3-Day Studio Art Workshop

Enjoy a long weekend to learn about tools, techniques, and strategies that will help stimulate your process and add expressive drama to your figurative artwork. Observe the value of collaboration in silencing your personal critic. Develop strategies to make your product less precious and your process more joyful. Fabricate primitive dowel pens, realize the benefit of extending your tool handles, and learn to create abstract “environments” out of previously failed artworks to create a springboard for a new figure process. Discuss the relationship of physicality and mark-making. To foster spontaneity, you will be encouraged to work with non-traditional tools, processes, and mixed media.

Facility and Setup: To ensure that participants have ample workspace and instructional contact, the enrollment will be limited to 9 artists. We will work with extraordinary life models each day. Our facility is the Hannon Barn in rural Arroyo Grande. Directions and supply lists will be provided to all enrollees. Participants will be encouraged to bring what they need in terms of lunch, snacks, and drinks, so they don’t need to leave the property during our one-hour lunch and can socialize or tinker instead. Carpooling is encouraged. There will be an assortment of folding tables, sawhorses and planks, and stools available for our workstations. Local artists can bring their own floor or tabletop easels, supply stands, stools, chairs or seatpads – for specific work or health needs.
